Sou Fujimoto has designed a public toilet with a communal handwashing area as the final part of the Tokyo Toilet project. The Japanese architect states that public toilets are a watering place in the middle of the city and a source of water supply.
Fujimoto develops the toilet volume in the form of a large washbasin. An open-air corridor separates the white toilet cubicles from the common handwashing area. The communal washbasin is accessible from both the street and the interior corridor. This approach emphasizes the need for hygiene and creates an alternative space for socializing.
The men's and women's toilet cubicles are accessed from the open-air corridor, while the disabled toilet and baby care room are accessed from the rear. As with the exterior, the interiors of the cabins are made entirely of white surfaces, providing a sense of cleanliness.
