Le Grand Pavois – Jean-Louis Fayeton & Michel Herbert (1969–71)

Paris'in 15. arrondissement'ında, dört ana cadde arasında tüm bir blokta yayılan Le Grand Pavois, orta-geç modernist döneme damga vuran dev yapı komplekslerinden biridir. Proje, iki birbirine geçen kütleden oluşuyor — biri alçak, oval formda; diğeri ise boomerang formunda yükselen bir blok — ve blokların kesişimiyle yapı dengeli ve dinamik bir estetik kazanıyor.


Modern yaşam ve toplumsal ihtiyaçlara cevap veren bu kompleks, gölet benzeri iç bahçeye ve çevresel yeşil alanlara sahip. Zemin katındaki ticari ve kamusal mekânlar mahalleye canlılık katıyor. 16 katlı yüksek bloktaki ince balkonlar cephe boyunca ritmik bir siluet sunarken yapı, “küçük bir kent" hissi uyandırıyor.


Yapının karakteristik öğelerinden biri, balkonların altındaki payandalar. Bu diyagonal konsollar, hem strüktürel olarak çıkmaların yükünü taşıyor hem de cephede güçlü bir mimari ifade oluşturuyor. Modernist dönemin mühendislik estetiğini yansıtan bu çözüm, Le Grand Pavois'un siluetine hem teknik hem görsel anlamda dinamizm katıyor.

Spanning an entire block between four main streets in Paris's 15th arrondissement, Le Grand Pavois is one of the monumental building complexes that defined the mid-to-late modernist period. The project consists of two interconnected masses—one low, oval-shaped; the other a boomerang-shaped, rising block—and the intersection of the blocks gives the structure a balanced and dynamic aesthetic.


Responding to modern living and social needs, this complex features a pond-like inner courtyard and surrounding green spaces. The commercial and public spaces on the ground floor bring vitality to the neighborhood. The slender balconies on the 16-story high block create a rhythmic silhouette along the facade, giving the building the feel of a “small town."


One of the building's characteristic elements is the buttresses beneath the balconies. These diagonal consoles both structurally support the projections and create a powerful architectural expression on the facade. Reflecting the engineering aesthetics of the modernist era, this solution adds dynamism to Le Grand Pavois' silhouette both technically and visually.
